ENG 3400 - Literature of the Biblical World

This course offers students in-depth reading of extra-biblical literature (e.g. Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman) that circulated alongside Jewish and Christian scriptures, giving them a deeper understanding of how the texts of the Bible resonated amid the influential texts, genres, and cultures of the ancient and classical world. As students learn about ancient wisdom literature, epics, poetry, Greco-Roman romance stories, and epistolary rhetoric, they will explore connections with the style, content, and original audiences of the Bible. Students read such works as The Enuma Elish, The Maxims of Ptahhotep, Instruction of Amenemope, Lugalbanda in the Mountain Cave, The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Tale of Sinuhe, Egyptian love poetry, Daphnis and Chloe, Chaereas and Callirhoe, Leucippe and Clitophon, Cicero’s letters, Josephus’ Jewish Antiquities, The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid.
