EDFD 6120 - Education in an Urban Setting This course is designed to prepare graduate students for those challenges specific to successful teaching in an urban school. Children in urban classrooms come to school with great diversity with regard to income, parental support, ethnic identity, access to resources, readiness to learn, and language acquisition. It is important for educators to understand these environments and to acquire strategies for success in such settings. Topics addressed in this course include: history of urban schools, teaching for children in poverty, multicultural awareness/affirmation, research in urban education, urban classroom management, language development trends/issues, and relationships across cultures.
Credit Hours: 3
