The mission of the Department of Art is to:
- Enrich the artistic understanding of all students;
- Develop competent artists, designers and teachers of art; and
- Supply the art training required by various disciplines.
The purpose and principles of God’s creation are stressed as a design norm, and the Christian ethic is promoted as a model for living. Many courses requiring no special ability are open to all students and are recommended electives.
The department reserves the right for each teacher of an art class to retain one example of each student’s work each semester for addition to the department’s permanent collection.
Sophomore Portfolio Requirement for Art, Graphic Design, painting, and Three-Dimensional Design majors: Required after the student has completed 12 hours of art core classes, including ART 103 , ART 200 , ART 260 , and either ART 118 or ART 220 or ART 291 . Passing the Sophomore Portfolio Review is a prerequisite for the following courses: ART 300 , , , , , , , , , , , , , and .
Sophomore Portfolio Requirement for Interior Design majors: Required after the student has completed: ART 200 , ART 260 , , IDA 108 , , , and IDA 221 . The student must also have a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all university courses and a GPA 2.25 in all art and design courses. Passing the Sophomore Portfolio Review is a prerequisite to the following junior level courses: , , and . Remaining 200 level art courses are intended to reinforce and expand the skills necessary for junior level studio courses
Art Core Requirements: The following 34-hour core of art courses is required of all art majors except Interior Design: ART 103 , ART 104 , ART 105 , ART 200 , ART 231 , ART 232 , ART 291 ; 3 hours from ART 205 , ART 235 , ART 312 , ART 340 , ART 400 (not required for BFA Graphic Design); ART 260 ; ART 375 ; 3 hours from ART 430 , ART 431 , ART 432 , ART 433 , ART 434 ; ART 450 .
Teacher Licensure: The Bachelor of Arts degree with teacher licensure is available.
Interior Design Majors Requirement: All students enrolled in the Interior Design degree program must have ready access to a laptop computer and designated software. Specific computer and software requirements are posted on the Harding University Art & Design web site. Courses that require the student regularly bring a laptop to class include: IDA 221 , , , IDA 350 , IDA 370 , IDA 371 , IDA 372 , IDA 476 and IDA 478 .
