Social Studies as a Second Teaching Field

Requirements for adding social studies as an additional area of licensure:

Adding social studies requires that the licensure candidate complete the following performance-based program of study:

• HIST 101 - American History to 1877 Credit Hours: 3
• HIST 102 - American History Since 1877 Credit Hours: 3
• HIST 110 - Western Civilization to 1500 Credit Hours: 3
• HIST 111 - Western Civilization Since 1500 Credit Hours: 3
• HIST 201 - The U.S. and the World in the Contemporary Age Credit Hours: 3
• HIST 336 - Arkansas History Credit Hours: 3
• POLS 205 - American National Government Credit Hours: 3
• POLS 353 - Arkansas and State and Local Government Credit Hours: 3
• GEOG 302 - Regional Geography: Europe and the Americas Credit Hours: 3
• GEOG 303 - Regional Geography: Africa and Asia Credit Hours: 3
• 6 additional hours elected from economics, history, political science or sociology are required.

Total Hours: 36

The candidate for licensure must also obtain minimum scores on the Praxis II examination. The candidate is also reminded that questions from macroeconomics, sociology and world history are included on the Praxis II examination.
