COMM 4060 - Directing the Film

Filmmaking is a collaborative art form, but at the end of the day someone must "call the shots." The director's role is vital to seeing a film come together. In this course, students will study both the aesthetics and process of directing. Students will screen and analyze clips and full-length movies from representative classic and contemporary directors such as Charlie Chaplin, Clint Eastwood, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles, Woody Allen, Katherine Bigelow, the Coen Brothers, and others. Students will develop the ability to communicate with actors to adjust and build performances, explore the basic techniques of blocking and staging action for the camera, and learn to handle the practical problems and aesthetic questions that arise in filming a scene.
