ENG 3510 - Introduction to Publishing


This course will provide students with an overview of the histories, methods, and purposes of the book publishing industry. The specific aims are to introduce students to the history of the book, recent advancements in digital publishing, and theories of textuality pertaining to print and electronic means of production. Students will investigate both past and current technologies for designing, creating, marketing, and distributing books as well as analyze the evolution of the book market, while engaging with real-life examples. Designed for students with an interest in the history of the book or considering employment in the publishing industry, this course will consequently familiarize them with the multidisciplinary nature of publishing and the material culture in which it is situated. Through a variety of readings and hands-on projects, students will discover what books--and the book production process--means for readers, writers, and publishers.
