ENG 4220 - Nature and History of LanguageThis course surveys basic concepts in philology and linguistics, taking English as its principal subject of study. Students will develop an enhanced understanding of the historical and philosophical contexts that have shaped the development of English in particular and our view of the nature of language in general. To this end, they will read and discuss relevant mythological, philosophical, and historical texts as well as engage in the imaginative process of creating a language of their own.
