ENG 4180 - British NovelThis course explores the emergence and development of the British novel. Students will read and analyze several representative novels in light of the social, political, and spiritual situations these novels emerged to address. Additionally, students will study narrative conventions and examine the changing formal characteristics of the genre. Criticism will be introduced as appropriate. Particular themes vary. Novelists may include Daniel Defoe, Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Jane Austen, the Brontës, Mary Shelley, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Wilkie Collins, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, Ian McEwan, and A. S. Byatt. Credit Hours: 3 Term Offered: Fall of even years |
