ENG 3252 - British Literature II

Studying literature exposes students to a wide range of cultural and historical contexts, while at the same time sharpening analytical skills-skills that ultimately enable students to read and write at a level beyond basic competency and to think creatively. This course will survey the major periods, movements, writers, and texts of British literature from the end of the eighteenth century to the present. It thus lays the groundwork for further literary studies, teaching, and intellectual inquiry. Students will sharpen their skills of analysis and interpretation as they explore the cultural, political, historical, aesthetic, and spiritual dynamics of Romantic, Victorian, and 20th / 21st century British literature. Previously taught authors include Jane Austen, William Wordsworth, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Thomas Carlyle, Thomas Hardy, Christina Rossetti, Oscar Wilde, T. S. Eliot, D. H. Lawrence, George Orwell, Samuel Beckett, Doris Lessing, and Seamus Heaney, among many others.
