Spanish as a Second Teaching Field

Requirements

Students seeking licensure to teach Spanish must complete 27 hours of the language, including the following:

• SPAN 1010 - Elementary Spanish I Credit Hours: 4

• or SPAN 1030 Accelerated Elementary Spanish I Credit Hours: 3  

• SPAN 1020 - Elementary Spanish II Credit Hours: 4

• or SPAN 1040 Accelerated Elementary Spanish II Credit Hours: 3  

• SPAN 2010 - Intermediate Spanish I Credit Hours: 3
• SPAN 2020 - Intermediate Spanish II Credit Hours: 3
• SPAN 3030 - Advanced Grammar Credit Hours: 3
• SPAN 3040 - Cultures of Peninsular Spain Credit Hours: 3

• or SPAN 3150 Cultures of Latin America Credit Hours: 3  

  or SPAN 3250 Regional Language and Culture Credit Hours: 3  

• SPAN 3110 - Survey of Latin American Literature Credit Hours: 3

• or SPAN 4010 Survey of Peninsular Spanish Literature I Credit Hours: 3  

  or SPAN 4020 Survey of Peninsular Spanish Literature II Credit Hours: 3  

  or SPAN 4350 Literature of 20th & 21st Century Spain Credit Hours: 3   

  or SPAN 4360 Spanish Drama & Poetry of the 19th-21st Centuries Credit Hours: 3  

• SPAN 4330 - Advanced Phonetics Credit Hours: 3
• SPAN 4520 - Senior Seminar (Licensure) Credit Hours: 0, 2

Licensure Requirements

• FLAN 4100 - Foreign Language Teaching Methods and Assessment - Secondary Credit Hours: 3
• FLAN 4200 - Foreign Language Teaching Methods and Assessment, K-8 Credit Hours: 2
• RDNG 4150 - Disciplinary Literacy Credit Hours: 3

Note(s):

At least 9 of the total hours must be upper level.

SPAN 3130  is highly recommended.

The official ACTFL Oral Proficiency telephonic interview is required with a target rating of advanced low.
