Requirements

Liberal Arts: 50 Hours

Three hours of the Creative Spirit in the Liberal Arts  requirement are met within in the major, and is counted below. ENG 201  or ENG 202  is still required.

Major: 40 Hours

Prerequisites: A passing score of 80 percent or higher on the Theory Entrance Exam or MUS 170  with a grade of “B” or higher; and satisfactory performance on the Theory, Keyboard and Principal Applied Performance Evaluations in order to earn music major status.

Additional applied study: 6 Hours

Private applied instruction is offered in brass, guitar, percussion, piano, strings, voice and woodwinds. Class instruction is offered in guitar, piano and voice. Course prefixes and names are assigned according to the general nature of instruction, e.g. BRS (brass) and PIA (piano). Course may be repeated to meet major requirements.

Students whose primary instrument is piano may substitute MUS 304  for 3 hours of applied study.

The Music Department restricts applied enrollment through the music office.

Course fees are charged for private and class instruction and are listed within the course description if applicable. They normally are non-refundable after the last day to enroll; refunds must be approved by the department chair.

Students are expected to attend all lessons and rehearsals and to engage in extensive lesson preparation. In addition to lesson and practice activities, all applied students, regardless of major, must attend and perform in a weekly departmental Studio Hour. They are also required to perform on jury examinations every semester except those in which they have performed a full recital.

Note(s):

Students must take piano every semester for credit until they pass the Piano Proficiency Examination.

8 hours of ensemble credit may be applied toward this major.

Students are required to complete a juried, interdisciplinary capstone project as part of this degree.

Minor: 18 Hours

For students choosing the Bachelor of Arts in Music, a minor in Bible, Business or Theatre is encouraged but not required.

Remaining Bible/Electives: 20 Hours

BMIN 320  is required of all music majors, and satisfies the Bible requirement in the semester it is taken. See Bible Class Enrollment policy here.  Leveling for MUS 171 , if needed, decreases electives by 3 hours.

Total Hours: 128
