Mission
The mission of the Department of Kinesiology is to prepare Christian professionals for careers in teaching, coaching and sports-related business in the area of kinesiology.
Programs Offered
The department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in kinesiology (non-licensure) and the Bachelor of Science degree in the following majors: kinesiology and health (licensure) and sport and recreation management. The kinesiology and health licensure major prepares students to teach health and physical education and coach in elementary, middle, and secondary schools. The sport and recreation management major prepares students to work in the administrative, management, and business areas of sport (front office administration) and recreation (health clubs, retain, etc.). The kinesiology (non-licensure) major prepares students for careers associated with kinesiology.
A Master of Science in Kinesiology and Sport Administration is also offered. This graduate program is designed for professionals working in the areas of teaching, coaching, and athletic administration who want to pursue graduate education in kinesiology.
Minors are offered in coaching, health, kinesiology, outdoor recreation leadership, and sport and recreation management.
Liberal Arts Offerings
The institutional requirement of 3 hours in kinesiology can be met by KINS 1010 and 1 additional hour from the following: KINS 1120 , KINS 1170 , KINS 1190 , KINS 1210 , KINS 1220 , KINS 1250 , KINS 1260 , KINS 1280 , KINS 1310 , KINS 1320 , KINS 1330 , KINS 1340 , KINS 1350 , KINS 2140 ; and, for kinesiology majors and minors and sports management majors, KINS 3550 , KINS 3560 . Students who transfer to Harding with fewer than 2 hours of physical activity courses must take KINS 1010 .
Veterans
Veterans who have spent at least one year in continuous active military duty may receive credit for the 3 hours of kinesiology required by Harding by filing a written request with the registrar and submitting a copy of the DD214.
Required Proficiency
All kinesiology majors must demonstrate proficiency in swimming or take KINS 1120 as leveling work. Students with disabilities are reasonably accommodated in compliance with federal and state guidelines.
Required Core
All Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree majors require a uniform kinesiology core of 12 hours. The purpose of the core is to provide all kinesiology students with a common body of knowledge.
