RDNG 609 - Literacy and Diversity This course includes a study of student diversity (student exceptionalities, English language learners, race, ethnicity, class, gender, and religion) and the impact of these on learning to be literate in American schools. Included is the study of the teacher’s role as the agent of quality differentiated instruction as it relates specifically to reading and writing in the general and intervention curriculum. Specifically, this course will require literacy educators to participate in 12 hours of field experience practice as they assess, plan intervention, and tutor diverse students. Topics of study will include: IDEA, inclusion, due process, learning disabilities, giftedness, English language learners, literacy issues for students of diversity, appropriate assessments, interventions, and working cooperatively with diverse colleagues.
