Medical Humanities


The program learning outcomes for this major are:

  • Integrating approaches to medical issues with perspectives from the humanities, including literature, history, ethics, the arts, and religion.
  • Analyzing the differences between social and cultural contexts and how they affect medical practice.
  • Connecting concepts and understandings of disease, death, treatments, and wellness to different historical eras and to various locations around the globe.
  • Synthesis of knowledge from various disciplines in the medical humanities and communication of reasoned arguments regarding the role of humanities in medical care.
  • Research in the medical humanities with an appropriately designed study within the students’ area of interest.
  • Creation of a personal philosophy of ethics based on appropriate models.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing with the language and terminology of both the medical field and humanities.
